Nearly 20% of the UK population is functionally illiterate. This shocking statistic impacts on all areas of life, including the workplace. Illiteracy costs workplaces untold sums of money due to the errors that are made, and it also creates a sense of shame and stigma.
In this session, PILAA will explore what illiteracy is, how it affects organisations and companies, and what you can do about it. We will offer concrete suggestions for how you can navigate illiteracy and best support your employees and colleagues.
Attendees will look at:
- Introduction
- Definition of illiteracy and statistics regarding how many people are affected by it
- Exploration of how illiteracy impacts the workplace and society (ethically, financially, emotionally, practically, etc.)
- Analysis of what can be done about this, by the workplace itself, by the individuals concerned and by larger community or society initiatives
- Discussion and Q&A
